When I write articles, I save the drafts either on my hard drive or online. This is important because you'll never know you might need to check on them in the future. The reason why I am making this article is to share my experience on the evolution of how I save my files.
Disclaimer: There might be other ways of doing it but this is just my share.
- Diskettes -
Gone were the diskette days where one gigabyte worth of project data would take five to ten number of diskettes. I have spoken with some teenage computer users and asked them about the diskette. They have no idea what it is and how it looks like. It's actually funny because what I was talking about was just right in front of them as they were looking at a Microsoft Office application, I am referring to the Word application. They know where and what the save button is but they never thought that was the same exact thing that I was referring to. And so I let them research about it further, the conversation ended with them wondering what this significant icon is.
What I am trying to say here is that technology had evolved super fast that most of the youths aren't aware what I know before. So today, I would like to show how saving documents had evolved base on my experience and knowledge.
Back when I was in my secondary years, I was inyroduced to this little square stuff with a metallic circle on it. I learned it can contain a megabyte of data from a computer. We somehow manage to save one or two of our Word document projects from the computer laboratory.
- CD or DVD -
Then the compact disks came, rewritable or read only depending on what you like. I remember saving a lot of good movies but after two months or so, when I accessed the CD or DVD, there were no longer data available. Looked like the diskettes are a lot more reliable than the CDs.
- USB -
When I got to college and moved to the city, I met a lot of advance ideas on securing my files. I learned about the universal serial bus or usb. I bought my first 1 gigabyte usb device for Php 1500, pqi brand, that was year 2006. Nowadays, you can buy 16 gigabyte usb for just Php 500+.
- SD -
Together with the usb evolution came the micro SDs which can be inserted on digital cameras and phones.
- External Drives -
Then before I graduated, I came to know about these external drives which can contain thousands if not hundreds of data. I didn't buy one though but thanks to my brother who gave me one and I am still using it. It can save 500 gigabyte amount of data.
- Online / Cloud Drives -
The only constant thing here in this world is indeed change. Because technology is fast evolving, the way of saving our files has also change. This year of 2013, actually this type of option has been available since 2009. What I am referring here are the online drives, there are websites which gives us the option to save our documents over the internet. These sites includes, live.com, dropbox and many others. The internet has so much to offer. So as long as you are connected via the internet, you can access your files any time you want.
So how do you save your files?
